Our verdict
Buy one keepsake and one genuinely useful item. Skip anything that only works for six weeks.
Best forGrandparents and godparents buying for a baby's first Christmas
Budget$15-120
A six-month-old does not know it is Christmas, so the gift is really for the adults in the room. That is not a cynical observation; it is useful shopping advice. Buy something the parents will photograph, and something they will use before the end of January.
We asked four families with babies under one what they kept, what they used and what went straight to the charity shop. The pattern was remarkably consistent.
How we chose
We judged every gift on two axes: does it survive as a memory, and does it earn its space in a small flat?
Nothing that requires batteries and makes noise at 5am.
Nothing sized for a newborn if the baby is already six months old.
Nothing that duplicates an item the parents already own four of.
One item that will still be in a box in twenty years.
What to look for
Keepsake, but useful
An engraved ornament, a first-Christmas book with a message written inside, a hand-and-foot print kit. These are the things that get packed away carefully and unpacked every year. Avoid anything that requires the parents to do craft work in December.
Clothing in the size they will be
Babies grow out of newborn sizes in weeks. Buy twelve to eighteen months, in a neutral colour, and check whether the family prefers zips or poppers before you buy anything with more than three fasteners.
Something for the parents
The most appreciated gifts in our test were the ones that gave the parents an hour back: a meal delivery voucher, a night of babysitting, a coffee subscription. Nobody puts that on Instagram, but everybody remembers it.
The bottom line
Buy an engraved ornament as the keepsake, a correctly sized sleep sack as the practical gift, and if you have budget left, a meal voucher for the parents. That combination was kept, used and remembered in every household we spoke to.

Name and date engraved, not printed. It goes on the tree every year for the next two decades.
What size clothes should I buy for a baby's first Christmas?
Buy twelve to eighteen months, not newborn. Babies under six months grow out of smaller sizes within weeks, and parents usually already have a full wardrobe in the smallest sizes.
Is a personalised gift worth the extra cost?
For a first Christmas, yes. Engraving turns an ordinary object into the thing that gets kept. Just order three weeks early; engravers get busy in November.
Should I buy toys for a baby at Christmas?
One or two, at most. Babies this age are overwhelmed easily and parents are already drowning in plastic. A book and a single well-chosen sensory toy is plenty.
