Our verdict
Buy the first book in a series, in hardback, and write a message inside. That is the whole strategy.

Budget$8-30
Books are the gift that adults feel good about giving and children genuinely use, provided you get the age band right. The gap between a book a five-year-old can follow and one they cannot is enormous, and it is not visible from the cover.
We read our way through the shelves with four families over a year, noting which books got requested again and which were politely finished once.
How we chose
Re-readability was the main criterion. A good children’s book is one an adult can stand to read forty times.
Text that reads aloud well, without tongue-twisting clauses.
Illustrations that reward a second look.
A story with a real ending, not a moral.
Physical quality: sewn binding, thick paper, hard covers.
Picking by age
Under three
Board books with flaps and mirrors. Short, sturdy, and designed to be chewed. Buy two or three rather than one expensive hardback.
Three to five
Cumulative stories where something repeats and builds. Children this age love predicting the next line, and repetition is how they learn narrative structure.
Five to seven
Illustrated chapter books with a picture every other page. This is the bridge that turns a child into a reader, and it is the most under-gifted age band.
Seven to ten
Series starters. Buy book one only. If they like it, they will ask for the rest, which is a gift that keeps working all year.
The bottom line
Choose hardback, choose the first in a series, and write something on the inside cover. A book with a message in it becomes an object with a memory attached, which is more than most gifts manage.

★★★★★9.2/10
Thick pages, sturdy flaps, high-contrast pictures. Buy two; one will lose a flap and the other will survive.
