A balance bike replaces a stroller for short trips, which is why parents rate it so highly.

Our verdict
Buy a balance bike before a scooter before a pedal bike. The sequence matters more than the brand.
Best forFamilies with children aged two to six
Budget$45-180
Ride-on toys are the one category where the cheap option is often the right option, and the expensive option is often a mistake. A heavy, battery-powered jeep looks magnificent in a photograph and gets used four times before the battery degrades.
We followed six families and their ride-on purchases for eighteen months, tracking how often each item came out of the shed.
How we chose
Usage frequency was the deciding factor, not features. Anything that needed a car journey to use lost.
Could a child use it from the front door?
Could they carry or push it themselves when tired?
Does it still work in eighteen months?
Would it survive being left outside overnight?
The order to buy things in
First: a balance bike
From about eighteen months to four years. No pedals, no training wheels, and it teaches balance directly. Children who master a balance bike usually skip training wheels entirely.
Second: a three-wheeled scooter
From about three to six. Faster than walking, folds for the car, and gives a child genuine independence on the school run. Get one with lean steering and an adjustable bar.
Third: a pedal bike
From about four or five, once they can balance. Do not buy a bike with stabilisers; they teach a child to lean the wrong way and delay the real skill.
Last, or never: motorised ride-ons
Heavy, slow to charge, and impossible to use indoors. Unless you have a driveway and a child who loves vehicles more than movement, skip them.
The bottom line
Buy a lightweight balance bike with an adjustable seat that drops low enough for flat feet. Add a helmet at the same time so it gets used from day one.

Under four kilos, adjustable seat, puncture-proof tyres. This is the item that replaces the stroller.
