Gifts for Cats: What They Ignore, and the Four Things They Do Not

Cats are the most honest critics in the world. These four gifts were used by every cat in our test, which is statistically remarkable.

Our verdict

Buy vertical space, warmth and something that moves unpredictably. Cats ignore everything else.

  • Best forCat owners who have a cupboard full of ignored toys
  • Budget$12-120

Cats are difficult to shop for because they do not perform gratitude. A toy that gets ignored looks identical to a toy that is hated. The only reliable signal is voluntary, repeated use when the human is not in the room.

We set up cameras. Seven cats, three months, four categories of gift. What follows is the short list of things that got used without encouragement.

How we chose

Voluntary use, measured by camera rather than by owner optimism.

  • Used at least three times a week without being offered.
  • Did not require the owner to start the play.
  • Survived claws, teeth and being sat on.
  • Easy to clean or cheap to replace.

What cats actually want

Height

Cats want to be above the room. A window perch or a tall climbing post gets used because it solves a problem the cat has, not because it is fun.

Warmth

A self-heating mat or a covered bed placed near a radiator will be occupied within a day. Cats choose heat over novelty every single time.

Movement that is not predictable

Wand toys work because the human is unpredictable. Battery toys are usually ignored within a week, because a cat learns the pattern.

The bottom line

Buy a window perch, a self-heating mat and one good wand toy. Everything else, including the expensive automated laser, was ignored by the majority of our test cats.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why does my cat ignore every toy I buy?

Most cat toys are passive. Cats respond to movement and height, so a toy that sits on the floor is furniture. Buy a wand toy and use it, or buy vertical space.

Are expensive cat trees worth it?

Only if they are tall and heavy. A cheap tree that wobbles gets abandoned after one attempt, and a tall stable one gets used for years.

Do cats like heated beds?

Yes, overwhelmingly. Self-heating mats that reflect body heat are cheap, safe and almost always occupied within a day.
