Our verdict
Wait for big-ticket toys, headphones and small appliances. Buy books, games and anything limited-stock early.
Best forShoppers planning a December budget in November
Budget$20-300
Black Friday stopped being a single day somewhere around 2019. It is now a three-week pricing event, which is good news for shoppers who plan and bad news for anyone who assumes the biggest number on the page is the best deal.
We tracked prices across four gift categories for three months before the event, then compared them with the advertised discounts. Roughly a third of the “deals” we recorded were the same price as October.
How to tell a real deal
Price history is the only reliable tool. Three data points matter: the price in September, the price two weeks before Black Friday, and the advertised price.
If the pre-sale price is higher than it was in September, the discount is manufactured.
If stock is limited and the item is popular, the price will not drop further in December.
If the brand rarely discounts, a 20 per cent cut is meaningful.
If the item is last year’s model, wait; January is cheaper.
Where the discounts are real
Toys and large playsets
Toy brands discount deeply in November to clear volume before Christmas. This is the category with the most genuine reductions, particularly on big-box sets.
Small kitchen appliances
Air fryers, coffee machines and mixers follow a predictable cycle. Black Friday is consistently the cheapest week of the year for these, and the models are rarely replaced in December.
Bedding and towels
Home textile brands run their deepest promotions in late November. If you are gifting linen or a throw, this is the week.
Where waiting costs you
Books and board games
Discounts are shallow and stock is the real constraint. Buy early rather than hoping for 30 per cent off a title that sells out in week one.
Anything with a licensing deadline
If a toy is tied to a film released in November, it will not be discounted before Christmas. Buy it when you see it, or accept the resale market.
The bottom line
Plan the big-ticket items for Black Friday week and buy the small, stock-sensitive gifts in early November. Check price history on anything over a hundred dollars before you believe the percentage.

★★★★★9.1/10
Consistently cheapest in the last week of November. The model rarely changes, so a discount is a discount.
For toys, small appliances and bedding, usually yes. For books, games and new releases, no. The December 10th to 14th window often matches Black Friday on slower-moving stock.
How do I check whether a discount is real?
Look at the price in September and early October. If the item was cheaper before the sale started, the discount was manufactured by raising the price first.
Should I buy electronics on Black Friday?
Previous-generation models, yes. Brand-new releases, no. The newest model rarely gets a meaningful discount and is often replaced in January.
