Firepower, spread, lock-on and when each one is worth the cost
Most fishing games give you more than one cannon. Choosing the right one for the target is the closest thing the genre has to a strategy layer.
Cannons usually scale in cost from a single-credit basic gun up to a heavy cannon costing twenty or more credits per shot. Higher-tier cannons typically increase both the damage per hit and the cost, leaving the expected return unchanged but stretching the distribution.
Some games let you adjust power with a slider instead of switching weapons, which achieves the same thing: same game, different variance.
Premium ammo adds effects – a wider blast radius that catches a group, a laser that penetrates several fish, a net that holds a target in place, or a homing shot that guarantees a hit.
Those effects are priced into the shell cost. A laser that hits three fish at 3x the shot cost is not automatically better value than three ordinary shots; it is a different risk profile, and useful mainly when fish are stacked in a line.
Automatic lock-on removes the aiming skill but reveals the target's value and hit probability. Manual aiming saves nothing but lets you lead a moving fish and conserve shots on empty water.
The practical rule is to use lock-on for boss fish, where knowing the multiplier justifies the ammo spend, and manual fire on shoals, where volume matters more than precision.
Pick your cannon tier from your budget before the first shot and change it only when the session plan says so.
| Cannon tiers | Typically 1x to 20x shot cost |
| Special ammo | Blast, laser, net, homing |
| Lock-on best use | High-multiplier boss fish |
| Biggest session lever | Cannon tier |
It wins bigger and loses bigger - the expected return is unchanged.
Only against rare, high-value targets where a miss is expensive.
When your shot count is falling faster than your balance is rising.
