Football is the most bet-on sport in the world. Understanding the three core markets explains how almost every football bet is priced.

The 1X2 market

1X2 gives three possible outcomes: home win, draw, away win. It is the simplest football market and the one every operator prices most aggressively, with margins usually between 2% and 5% on major leagues.

Because a draw is a genuine outcome, 1X2 prices on evenly matched teams often sit above 3.00 for both sides. That makes the market popular with accumulators, where selections are multiplied together.

Asian handicap and removing the draw

The Asian handicap gives one team a goal start or deficit and removes the draw from the equation. A -0.5 handicap means the favourite must win; a -1.5 means they must win by two.

Whole-number handicaps introduce the possibility of a push – a stake refunded – while quarter handicaps split the stake between the two adjacent lines. Asian handicap markets usually carry lower margins than 1X2, often under 3%, which makes them attractive to regular bettors.

Over/Under and goals markets

The over/under total goals market asks whether the match will produce more or fewer than a stated number of goals, commonly 2.5, which removes the possibility of exactly hitting the line.

Pricing depends on expected goals rather than on who is expected to win, which makes it a useful market for bettors with a view on a team's style rather than its quality. Both teams to score, correct score and first goalscorer markets are priced with wider margins.

Pro tip

If you like accumulators, cap them at three legs. Beyond that you are mostly paying margin.

Frequently asked questions

A whole-number handicap landing exactly on the line refunds your stake.

Why do accas pay so much?

Because the probabilities multiply and the margins compound.

Which market has the best value?

Usually the Asian handicap, because its margin is typically the lowest.
