Golden Flower and Bull Poker are staples of Asian gaming floors and online Asian lobbies. Both are simple to learn, fast to play and built around comparing three or five cards.

Golden Flower (Zha Jin Hua)

Each player receives three cards face down and bets into a pot across several rounds, either blind or after looking at their cards. At showdown the best three-card hand wins, and the ranking order is: three of a kind, straight flush, flush, straight, pair, then high card.

The distinguishing wrinkle is that a straight beats a flush in Golden Flower, because straights are harder to make with only three cards. Players bet blind to project confidence, which is why the game is sometimes called 'the bluffing game' in English.

Bull Poker and Niu Niu

Bull Poker – Niu Niu in Chinese – deals five cards. You split them into a group of three and a group of two, where the three-card group must total a multiple of ten. The remaining two cards then determine your 'bull' value, from Bull 1 to Bull 10, with Bull Bull (a ten-value pair) the strongest ordinary hand.

If no three-card group totals a multiple of ten, the hand is a 'no bull' and loses to any qualified hand. Special hands such as five small cards, five face cards and four of a kind rank above Bull Bull in most house rules.

Variants you will meet

Hundred-Person Bull and Banker Bull turn the game into a one-against-many format where a single banker covers multiple player seats, and players compete for the banking role based on bet size or a rotating schedule. Show Hand Bull adds a Golden Flower-style betting sequence before the five-card comparison.

These variants are extremely popular in Asian online lobbies because they deliver many player positions from a single deal – a real advantage for a small studio table.

Pro tip

In Bull Poker, work out the three-card multiple of ten first. Everything else follows from that one split.
