Our verdict
Personalise objects that would be good anyway, and keep the text short. Two words beats a paragraph.

Budget$20-90
Personalisation is meant to signal thought, but it often signals a catalogue. The difference is restraint: a single initial or a date, applied to a well-made object, reads as considered. A full quote applied to a cheap object reads as a gift shop.
We ordered twelve personalised home gifts and lived with them for six months, judging them by whether guests asked about them or ignored them.
How we chose
We scored the base object first, then the personalisation. If the object would not be worth buying blank, the engraving does not save it.
Engraved or embroidered rather than printed.
Short text: an initial, a date, a surname.
Base object good enough to buy without the personalisation.
Delivered in under two weeks in November.
What works
Serving boards
A thick wooden board with a single surname engraved on the underside is the most quietly successful personalised gift we tested. It gets used, and the text does not dominate.
Linen textiles
Embroidered initials on linen tea towels or napkins look intentional and survive washing. Printed text peels within a year.
Glassware
Etched glass is permanent, unlike printed. Two tumblers with initials is a good housewarming gift that costs less than a bottle of something decent.
The bottom line
Buy a good object and personalise it discreetly, in two words or fewer. The serving board and the etched tumblers were the two gifts people actually kept out on display.

Thick hardwood, simple engraving, and it lives on the counter rather than in a cupboard.
