Traditional mahjong needs four players. Two-player and Blood Battle variants redesign the rules so the game works with fewer seats - and raises the stakes on every hand.

Two-player mahjong

Two-player mahjong keeps the tile set and the four-meld-plus-pair win condition but reduces the table to two hands. Most implementations remove one suit entirely or reduce the copy count, which makes melds easier to complete and the game dramatically faster.

The strategic shift is significant: with only one opponent to read, defensive play becomes more important relative to hand-building, and the discard pool is a far more reliable source of information.

Blood Battle Mahjong (Xue Zhan Dao Di)

Blood Battle is a Sichuan variant with two distinctive rules. First, the game does not stop when one player wins – the remaining players continue on the same dealt hand, so a single deal can produce several winners. Second, players cannot claim another player's discard to complete a sequence, only a triplet or a kong.

The result is a game that rewards self-sufficiency. Because you cannot rely on draws from discards, hand building is more about drawing the right tiles than reading the table.

The absence of honour tiles

Classic Blood Battle uses only the three number suits – 108 tiles – and removes all winds and dragons. With only three suits and no honours, sequences become far more common and hands complete quickly.

The scoring system is pattern-based, with multipliers for all-one-suit hands, all-triplets hands and hands that are entirely concealed. Understanding the multiplier table matters more here than in any other variant because the same fourteen tiles can be worth five times as much depending on their shape.

Pro tip

In Blood Battle, build hands that score multipliers rather than hands that merely complete. The shape is the payout.

Frequently asked questions

Can chows be claimed in Blood Battle?

No. Only pungs and kongs may be claimed from discards.

How can a deal produce several winners?

The hand continues after the first winner; later players can also complete winning hands.

Is two-player mahjong easier?

It is faster and involves less information, but the smaller tile pool changes the value of every pattern.
