Racing is where betting began, and it still has the richest set of bet types in any sport. It is also where the difference between pool betting and fixed odds matters most.

Fixed odds versus pari-mutuel

Fixed odds betting locks in the price when you place the bet, so you know exactly what you will receive. This is the model used by most online sportsbooks and by betting exchanges.

Pari-mutuel or tote betting pools all stakes on a race and divides the pool among the winners after a deduction. The price is unknown until the pool closes, and it depends on how much money was placed on each runner – so a heavily backed horse shortens everyone's payout.

The main bet types

A win bet pays only if the selection finishes first. A place bet pays if it finishes in the qualifying positions – usually the first two, three or four depending on field size – at a reduced price. Each-way combines both, effectively halving your stake across a win and a place.

Exotic bets combine multiple selections: forecasts (first and second in order), tricasts (first three in order), and accumulator-style doubles, trebles and Yankees. Each layer adds margin.

Reading a form guide

A form guide compresses a horse's recent history into a short string of figures and letters. Look for consistency rather than brilliance: a runner finishing second and third repeatedly is usually a steadier proposition than one that won once and has been unplaced since.

Beyond form, three factors move results: going (the ground condition), the draw (starting position, which matters enormously on some tracks) and the distance, since some horses are specialists over particular trips.

Pro tip

In racing, check the going and the draw before reading the form. Conditions beat reputation.
