Live baccarat is the highest-volume table game in the world, and most of its culture comes from the rituals rather than the rules.

Speed baccarat versus the squeeze

Providers now offer the same game at several speeds. Speed baccarat removes almost all downtime and can deliver more than 100 rounds an hour. Classic squeeze baccarat does the opposite: the cards are revealed slowly, often by a player, in a theatrical ritual that can take a minute per hand.

The mathematical edge is identical. The difference is purely in pacing and atmosphere, which is why the same table can attract two completely different types of player.

The squeeze, explained

In squeeze baccarat, the cards for a hand are revealed by bending them progressively from the corner. The player with the largest wager on that hand usually earns the honour. Revealing the cards to the table rather than the camera is considered good manners, and a hand revealed in a single motion is gently frowned upon.

None of this changes a card. The squeeze is a ritual that stretches a two-second result into a shared suspense experience.

Reading the roads

The scoreboard, called the road, records results in several notations. The bead plate simply marks P or B in sequence. The big road draws a column for each banker or player streak, moving right when the result changes. The big eye boy and small road track whether streaks repeat a pattern, and the cockroach pig is the most abstract of all.

These displays are a record and a decision aid, not a predictor. Each hand is dealt from an independently shuffled shoe, so no road can forecast the next result.

Pro tip

If you enjoy the theatre, choose squeeze tables and large bet sizes per hand - fewer hands per hour means a slower loss rate.
