Live blackjack brings the decision-making of the table to your screen - plus a set of side bets and tournament formats you will not find on a digital table.

The seat-based flow

A live blackjack table seats typically five to seven players, and the dealer addresses them in strict order from first base to third base. Every player must register a decision before the dealer moves to the next seat, so the pace depends on the slowest participant.

Digital timer bars show how long you have to act. If the timer expires, most studios apply a default rule, commonly standing on 12 or higher and hitting below it – so an idle player is not protected from making a poor decision.

House rules that move the edge

Live tables vary more than you would expect. Check whether the dealer stands or hits on soft 17, whether doubling is allowed after a split, how many splits are permitted, whether surrender is offered and whether a blackjack pays 3:2 or 6:5.

Each of those choices changes the house edge by a few tenths of a percent, and the 6:5 payout alone adds roughly 1.4%. Basic strategy remains the same in shape, but its value depends on the ruleset underneath it.

Side bets worth knowing about

Perfect Pairs pays on your first two cards being a pair, with higher payouts for a same-colour or same-suit pair. 21+3 combines your two cards with the dealer's upcard into a three-card poker hand and pays on a flush, straight or three of a kind. Both carry house edges in the region of 3% to 8%.

Bet-the-set and similar wagers pay when a specific card combination appears. All of them are independent of your main hand, so they neither help nor hurt basic strategy – they simply add volatility and cost.

Pro tip

Read the table's rule card before your first hand. The 3:2 / 6:5 difference alone is worth more than most strategy refinements.
