Live roulette has evolved from a single camera on a single wheel into a family of formats with different multipliers, different pacing and very different volatility.

Classic live roulette

A standard live table streams a real European or French wheel with a human dealer spinning and calling the result. Bets are placed on a digital layout that mirrors the felt, and the dealer's spin is broadcast live. With a single zero and standard payouts, the house edge is 2.70% on every bet.

Some providers add a 'racetrack' view that shows the wheel's physical layout, allowing call bets such as neighbours and complete sections that are difficult to place on a standard layout.

Lightning and multiplier roulette

In multiplier roulette, a number of lucky numbers are drawn before the wheel spins and are assigned random multipliers, typically from 50x to 500x. If the ball lands on a lucky number, straight-up bets on it pay the multiplier instead of the standard 35 to 1.

The cost of that excitement is that the base payout for all other straight-up bets is reduced to 29 to 1. Second-tier bonuses on neighbouring numbers partially offset this. The overall return depends on the multiplier mix, but the added variance is dramatic.

Immersive and themed studios

Some studios build roulette into elaborate physical sets – a tropical island, a television studio, a sports bar – with presenters, music and interactive banter. Others run a hybrid model where the wheel is automated and a presenter hosts the stream remotely.

These formats are entertainment products first. They are excellent for players who want atmosphere, and a poor fit for anyone optimising expected value.

Pro tip

Multiplier formats are variance engines. Halve your bet size versus classic roulette if you play them.

Only where the operator offers call bets - usually French or premium tables.

Do automated wheels differ from dealer wheels?

Only in presentation and pacing, not in mathematics.
